Vabank is without a question one of the masterpieces of Polish cinema and also the directorial debut of Juliusz Machulski, one of the most prolific Polish comedy-makers. A heist-movie, inspired by the all time classic The Sting by George Roy Hill, shows most of all the nostalgia for the 30s and the inter-war period, when Poland as a nation – as Machulski often highlights – “was truly independent and even the money was real”.
