Heavy Girls

Sven is a middle-aged man who works in a bank. When not in his job, he shares a flat, a bed and his not-too-successful of a life with his senile mother. Whenever he is away, his friend Daniel steps in and looks after her. Daniel keeps the flat tidy, accompanies her to the hairdresser, when shopping or taking a walk. One day, the elderly lady locks Sven on the balcony and goes for a walk into town on her own. Sven and Daniel can do nothing but go and look for the old woman wherever they can. Instead of finding a baffled granny, they discover affection for each other, which takes them both by surprise.

This debut feature film from the directorial pen of the remarkable Axel Ranisch is one of the foremost representatives of the so-called “German Mumblecore” genre. Shot in a matter of a few weeks, the film is radical in its form and uses no artificial lightning. It does, however, contain a good share of improvisation and distinctive humour. The jury of the Slamdance festival (Park City, Utah) awarded it the Special Award for its “bold originality” as well as the Spirit of Slamdance Award for the film that “best captures the creative, independent and courageous spirit of the festival”.
