Mephisto

Set in Germany in the thirties of the last century. A talented actor Hendrik Hoefgen sacrifices his morals, political beliefs, artistic ambitions, and personal life in the illusions that in a perverse totalitarian world could create a peaceful island art around him. With the passage of the social ladder, however he becomes lonely and an internally torn man in the hands of Nazi power, which he is assigned to... One of the top works of Hungarian director Istvan Szabo is an adaptation of the eponymous novel by Klaus Mann.
