The Act of Killing

In 1965 the Indonesian military took power over the country, the local petty criminals received a task - to kill communists. More than a million communists and ethnic Chinese intellectuals fell victim to a group of murderers, for whom the act of killing became routine, almost as routine as having lunch. Danish filmmakers called on the members of “firing squads" to become directors of the film depicting their actions. Murderers get the opportunity to stylize executions and interrogations and experience them again; thanks to the increased media coverage they are becoming guests in popular television shows in which they joked about their atrocities before the eyes of the entire nation, the nation they helped create.
