People on Sunday
Menschen am Sonntag (Robert Siodmak, Edgar G. Ulmer, DE, 1930, 74 min.)
The silent drama film People on Sunday followsthe lives of a group of residents of Berlin on a summer's day during the interwar period. The film is a result of cooperation of such future Hollywood talents as Billy Wilder, Robert Siodmak, Fred Zinnemann, or Edgar G. Ulmer. After an argument with his wife, Edwin, a taxi driver, decides to spend the afternoon at the beach with his friend Wolfgang. They are joined by Wolfgang’s new girlfriend Christl and her friend Brigitte. As the two young men are somewhat hot-headed, the relationships evolving on a sultry summer afternoon start to tangle. The film paints a picture of Berlin as we don’t know it; it’s a portrayal of the Berlin before Hitler, the 1930s metropolis, and of its young inhabitants’ lifestyle. The film will be accompanied by a live musical performance by PJONI.
